Sabin Online Petition Please join us in asking members of the United States Congress to help end NTDs by signing our petition: To the Members of the United States Congress: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) must be controlled, prevented and eliminated in order to help put an end to global poverty. Please help increase public awareness of NTDs by designating an official “NTD Day” in 2008 and increasing funding for NTD control. Neglected tropical diseases, including river blindness, hookworm and elephantiasis: - Are the most common diseases suffered by the poorest of the poor—one billion people living on less than $2 a day, which is more than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined.
- Literally destroy the lives of the world’s most destitute people. They blind, disable, disfigure, kill and keep individuals, families and entire communities locked in a cycle of poverty, from one generation to the next.
The seven most common NTDs can be treated, prevented and even eliminated—safely, effectively and affordably—for just 50 cents, per person, per year. This integrated control strategy, regarded as a model for global disease control, is already helping millions of the world’s poorest people begin to live healthier and more productive lives. By creating an NTD Day, the United States Congress will help generate global awareness and understanding of NTDs. By increasing funding for NTD control programs, Congress will help break the cycle of poverty and inspire other G8 nations, in addition to philanthropies, corporations and millions of individuals, to join the fight against these horrific diseases.
